Prepare for Your SUP Lesson or Tour

What to Bring to
SUP Lessons & Day Trips

You may think you have it dialed - but trust us, read this list!

For Lakes, Harbors, or other Flat Water Lessons

First SUP Lesson - What to Bring from Dylan Chandler

Not a complete list – but here’s some things to remember:

  • Payment – we’ll need to finalize payment onsite via Visa/MasterCard/Amex or cash before we begin.  We also have a waiver to sign.
  • Clothes – Please avoid cotton clothing. Board shorts and neoprene tops work great.  Sunblock fabrics also suggested.
  • Plan to get wet.  Don’t wear something you’re not prepared to get soaked.
  • Bring a jacket, especially for late afternoon or evenings.  Synthetic/breathable fabric is best.
  • Towel – bring a big towel, since big towels make it easier to change (some places don’t have bathrooms/changing areas)
  • Polarized Sunglasses – The people who wear them won’t stop telling you what you’re missing if you don’t wear them!
  • Sunglasses strap or float! Sunglasses come off over your head if you go in feet first! Be warned – this is the item EVERYONE thinks will survive that gets lost first!
  • Water – not soda, just good old water.  You’ll need to hydrate, so go for water, or Gatorade or something that hydrates.
  • Light snacks – something portable, and light.  Burritos are only easy to carry before you eat them.
  • Waterproof Sunblock and UV lip balm
  • Waterproof camera with strap.
  • Prescriptions or other medical necessities.
  • Consider a change of clothes – more often than not, you will get wet!
Your instructors will carry water proof bags and may be able to help carry things on the water.   If there’s something you’re considering bringing and want some advice – just reach out and we’re happy to chat about what you’ll need.

For SUP Surf Lessons (in the Ocean):

The list changes for surf clients – here’s some things to remember:

Surf SUP Lessons with Tim Chandler

  • Payment – we’ll need to finalize payment onsite via Visa/MasterCard/Amex or cash before we begin!
  • Wetsuit. Especially in winter months (Nov-April in So Cal) where this is a MUST.   Note, the size and thickness of the suit is personal opinion, but most of the year a wetsuit won’t hurt.  Women, wear a top under the suit so you can drop the top to your waist if you get hot in warmer weather.
  • Water proof sunblock for your face, like Aloe Gator GEL 40+.  Think ZINC for your lips.
  • CHEAP flip flops.  We’ll be leaving these on the beach, far from the car.  If they ‘wander off’ make sure they’re cheap.

Other items you’ll need for your ocean/surf session – similar to what you’ll need for Flat Water…

  • Payment – we’ll need to finalize payment onsite via Visa/MasterCard/Amex or cash before we begin!
  • You WILL GET WET surfing.  Don’t wear anything you’re not prepared to get soaked.
  • Towel – bring a big towel, since big towels make it easier to change (some places don’t have bathrooms/changing areas)
  • Water – not soda, just good old water.  You’ll need to hydrate, so go for water, or Gatorade or something that hydrates.
  • Light snacks – something portable, and light.  Remember, burritos are only easy to carry before you eat them.
  • Prescriptions or other medical necessities, we’ll keep them nearby for you.

What NOT TO BRING to your SURF SUP Lesson:

  • Sunglasses. Leave ’em in the car.
  • PFD.  It’s actually NOT something we use in the surf zone.
